How to List Skills on a Resume Without Stuffing

A skills section is a scan list, not a personality test. “Leadership, teamwork, Microsoft Office, C++, cooking” tells a parser nothing useful. Group tools you can demonstrate, and repeat the important ones inside experience bullets so they are not orphan keywords.

Better grouping

• Languages / tools: Python, SQL, Excel (pivot tables), Tally.
• Platforms: GitHub, Jira, Shopify, Salesforce (admin).
• Domain: GST filings, bedside care, CBSE grade 10 maths — only if trained.

Hard skills vs soft skills

Put tools and methods in Skills. Put collaboration in a bullet (“ran a weekly standup for a 4-person intern team”). Soft-skill word clouds get ignored and look padded.

Match the job post

If the posting says “MS Excel” and you wrote “spreadsheets,” change the label. If it says “React” and you only used HTML, do not add React. Interviewers will ask. Include both the acronym and the full name once if the posting uses both (Search Engine Optimization (SEO)).

Skill bars and stars

Charts that say you are 80% in Java do not parse well and look unprofessional. Type the skill. If you must show level, write “working knowledge” vs “used in production” in a short clause, or leave levels off.
