Resume vs CV: India, US, and When to Use Each

People use “resume” and “CV” interchangeably in India. In the US and much of Europe they mean different documents. Using the wrong length or structure can look unfocused.

Resume

A resume is a one- or two-page summary aimed at a specific job. It highlights relevant experience, skills, and education. Most private-sector applications in the US and many Indian private firms expect this format. MineResume is built for resumes: short sections, PDF, ATS-friendly headings.

Curriculum vitae (CV)

A CV is a full academic or research record: publications, teaching, grants, conferences. It can run many pages. Use it for PhD applications, research labs, and some government or academic posts. Do not paste a 6-page CV into a product-manager job on LinkedIn.

Practical rule

• India campus placements and most IT/BPO roles: 1–2 page resume.
• US industry jobs: 1 page early career, 2 pages if you have substantial experience.
• Academic / research: CV, often in the institution’s template.
• When the posting says “CV” in India for a corporate role, they usually still want a short resume.
